18. JUTLEJA
Maailm on kirjadest kirju.

Kuidas seal leida teed,
mismoodi ära tunda
veesooned, põhjaveed,
kuis jõuda allikani?

Mõnda ehk aitab vits.
Mõnele kulub ära
sõbraga koos võetud pits.

Mõni ei saagi saama,
mida seal sundida.
Sandidraama on tihti
tahtmatus kõndida.

Aga küsimus püsib.
Kes on see, kes teda küsib?

Kellel on julgust olla rumal
ja arg?
Kes tõstab käe, on tark.

See, kelle jalge all alati püsib algus,
teada tahtmine —
temast vallandub valgus.
Kes õpib, on õpetaja

18. PREACHER
Our world is mottled with letters.

How to find your way through it,
how best to recognize
waterways, groundwater,
how shall we discover their source?

Some need a divining rod
Others a drink
with a friend.

Some are simply unable,
For them nothing can be done.
Yet can you not just rise and go, or is it more
That you will not?

But the question still remains.
Who is it that is asking?

Who dares to admit he is stupid
or shy?
The smart one will stand and say “’Tis I!”)

He who looks for the source,
Thirsting for wisdom —
from him shines the light.
Only he who is ever-learning, Will truly be a teacher.

19. ELU
Kui palju inimlikke nõrkusi,
kui palju häbi, higi, hirmupimedust
peab läbi tantsima teel leidmiseni!
Siiski
on sellest rõõm.

Kõikidest, kelles
päev-päevalt tantsivad elu ja surm,
kelles kõlavad keeled,
kelles hüüavad kellad
Jumala poole.

Siin tahan elada, siin,
Kus valitseb tõemeel, õiguse riik,
Kus vabadusel on koda
Ja kodanikel on süda,
mis tunneb, mis tunnistab!

Ma sellele tantsule kutsun kõik,
kel inimhing kanda on antud!
Ma sellele tantsule kutsun kõik,
kel vaimule keha on ankruks —
kelles kõlavad keeled,
kelles hüüavad kellad
Jumala poole.

Jumala, Jumala, Jumala poole
hüüavad kellad.

19. LIFE
How myriad are our human weaknesses,
How much of shame, sweat, and fear
Have we to be dancing through while searching for knowledge!
And yet
I shall rejoice.

For all those in whom
every day ceaselessly dancing life and death,
in whom music resounds,
in whom the bells are chiming
Rising to God.

I prefer to live here, here
Where honesty governs and justice leads,
Where freedom true may reign, may reign
And citizens have a heart,
that feels, that witness bears!

To this dance you are now invited, all,
Everyone who has a spirit!
To this dance you are now invited, all,
Everyone’s limbs are anchored soul -
in whom the music resounds,
in whom the bells are chiming
Rising to God.

Rising to God, God, God
Tallinn.

15. ELU

15. LIFE
Here’s one more invitation to the dance.
And who could be fit to receive it?
The one who gives his own life for others,
to exchange it of his volition, selflessly?

But I hear strings shiver within, Hammering and pounding,
And clarity in truth disappears.
If only he would take my card and open it himself!

16. REKLAAMIMEES
Töö on ju töö ja minu töö on too:
ma päästan tammi tagant valla mõttevoo.
Saab maailm sisse keerlemiseks uue hoo,
see ohutu on – õnnetusi kaasa see ei too.

On rääkind jumal ühe,
mina räägin teise loo!
Kuid vahel haprail päevil
mul tundub elu lihtsalt mülgas — soo,
ma küll ei tea, kes ajakangast koob,
kuid oleks tollel masinal üks hoob,
ma peataks aja kulu aja käigu —
see teile jõhker-pahatahtlik näigu,
ent olemise matkimiseks, olemise siiraks oluks
ei ole ruumi minu rahutus pääkolus.

Ma nagu laps nüüd jumala ees põlvili siin pärin:
kui kõik on õhk ja pettepilt,
mis üldse on siis päris?
Ka keset palavamat päeva,
ka kodus mitme teki all,
mu keha läbib halvav külmavärin.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis.

16. AD MAN
Work is just work and my work is this:
From behind the dam I set free an open flow of thought.
The world takes new momentum from my spin.
It’s quite safe, you know. It won’t cause any accidents.

God has spoken to us,
But I tell a different story!
Yet sometimes on the fragile days
It seems that life is liquid, like a swamp.
I do not know who weaves time’s fabric,
but if I could, (for that machine has a handle,)
I would stop the waste of time, the movement through time —
To you this might seem brutal, or malicious,
But if we’re imitating truth, a state of some sincerity,
There’s no room in my restless skull for that.

Like a child now here, on my knees before God, I ask:
if all things must be empty air and false,
Then what remains on earth that’s true or real?
Even on the hottest day,
at home under my blankets,
My body shakes with paralyzing chills.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.

17. ELU

miserere nobis.

Kuid olen vaid üks tants,
kus igaüks peab ise õiged sammud,
õige rütmi leidma,
nüüd palun,
lausa anun!,
sesse tantsuringi teid ma,
sest kuigi seda maailma vahel kutsutakse
surma kuningriigiks,
te peate teadma,
mäng on seni viigis!

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
Dona nobis pacem.

17. LIFE
From the time we are children, always we are told – that this is how it is,
Our life has a set of rules and rigid customs we follow,
So you must hurry up and run, and study, preparing,
And only after all that do you start to live,
so the way of the world tells us, so they say.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.

I am only a dance,
A dance where everyone must find their own steps,
their perfect rhythm,
Now, asking,
I implore you!,
Join the circle of our dancing.
This beautiful world with its wonders is sometimes known as
the land where death is king,
You cannot help but know
We must take our chances!

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,
grant us peace.

12. ELU
Ses salmis järgmises ma otsin neiut uut:
las modell, las prostituut
nüüd olla elu pruut!
12. LIFE
In this next verse I seek a woman beyond reach:
a model, a prostitute
becomes life’s bride!
13. PROSTITUUT
Ai – tahan vastu
vaielda ma kohe —
kui panen ihu välja,
kõik veel pole müügiks!
Mu huulilt valla pääseb
teeseld ohe,
kuid parem täna märatseks ja röögiks:
on õelad pilgud mulle ilgeks nöögiks,
kas näeksite mind parem
koduhane kombel köögis?

Ma eal ei kanna kahel päeval
sama seelikut või särki,
ma kardan surma,
kardan igat tema märki
sest kordumine, kuhtumine
kulumine ongi surm;
on minu elu sisuks,
rahaks vahetada välimine hurm!

On iga korts mu silmanurgas
surma enda tähis
ning ennem kuivumist ma
pigem vaevleks vähis —
ent saate aru isand ELU —
pole ju vist munk te —
et kogun kõrgeks reitinguks
ma haruldasi punkte.

13. PROSTITUTE
No! — I want to argue,
to oppose it —
When I display my body,
not everything’s for sale, not yet!
My open lips may give you
a fake sigh,
But now I would rather rampage and roar:
His evil glances sicken me like slaps;
Would you not like to see me safe inside
a cosy home?

I fear to wear the same clothes
for two days,
I live in terror of my life, I fear
Every sign of him —
like recurrence, weakening,
until I am worn out,
I sell my liquidated charm
for cash.

Each wrinkle in the corner of my eye
A symbol of my fast-approaching death;
If cancer took me now, it’s far better
than letting me dry up —
But please do understand, dear blessed LIFE —
That you yourself aren’t acting like a monk,
Collecting extra points
For saving souls.

14. ELU
Jah, õppima sa oled olnud usin,
ent kui ma vahel siin
su maja ümber luusin,
ma kuulen aknast nuttu, kuulen tihket bluusi,
mil taeva alla joonistund
on kuusirp.

Kui kunagi veel leiad aega,
sammud sea,
ma ootan — tants on sulle valla
ja pettuma ei pea!
Ma proovin kurjaga
ja proovin heaga,
saab aru see,
kes mõtleb oma peaga.

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,
Domine Deus Sabaoth;
pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini
Hosanna in excelsis.

14. LIFE
Yes, you have learned your lessons too well,
But, sometimes, if I’m here,
Strolling around your gateway,
Then I hear you weeping, heavy blues are playing,
A new-born moon is rising
Above us.

Then, if you should ever have time to join
me, come along,
I have a dance reserved for you,
know you won’t regret it!
I try with cruelty
and I try with goodness,
Think for yourselves: you may find you
know her.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might;
Heaven and Earth are full of your glory
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

10. PANKUR:
Mul pole aega-aega-aega,
Pool kõnniteed on minu autot täis,

ent kell mu randmel ainult haua poole käib.

Miks tühjus minus, miks ma elada ei jaksa?
Teen trenni – hoian kopse, südant, maksa,
ent tunne on, et vikat kohe kaksab,
surm nagu möödaminnes mulle ära laksab.

10. BANKER:
I have no time-no time-no time,
at home I’m barely able to call out my “good-bye!”,
when death’s ever-ticking clock grabs at my throat.
By the close of the day I am sure of only one thing:
if illness, accident or murder may not break me,
Still, every moment that I live, I live only to die!
My parked car takes up half the pavement but the watch on my wrist counts
My steps towards the grave.

Why am I empty, why am I unable to live?
I exercise – care for my liver, lungs and heart,
and yet I feel the body blow of death’s scythe,
As if it were just passing by, reaping.

11. ELU
On öeldud:
Saatan peitub pisiasjus!
On öeldud: vara tööle, hilja voodi.
On kästud: kuluta ja kurja tee ja raiska —
las rajad kõik meid viia otse poodi!

Ma räägiks teisiti siin selle loo
ja laulaks kasvõi mööda noodist —
sa igal hetkel vae ja kaalu,
kas võtta vastu mõni mõruvõitu töö,
on prügikalu järvis,
meres huilab vaalu,
ent kõigi kohal lasub sama öö!

Nüüd hüvasti jää, kallis pankur,
kui tõesti arvad surma oma ankruks.
Kuid tea, et tantsukaardil sullegi on vaba koht,
kui ükskord elu jaoks sa valmis,
kui on möödas oht.

11. LIFE
It is said:
Satan lives in the detail!
It is said: early to work, and late to bed.
It is ordered: do evil and spend money and squander -
our many paths lead us to go shopping!

I’d rather tell this story otherwise
and even sing it at the wrong pitch -
each moment you consider weighing,
if work may plant more wormwood in your soul.
throw smaller fish to stray cats,
or hear whales singing in the sea,
Upon us still falls the same darkest night!

Now farewell to you, dearest banker,
if you really think that death is your anchor.
You know I have a dance card a free waltz for you,
if, you are ready for living,
danger’s passed.

Meie usume! Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium.

We believe!… in unum Dominum Iesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum, et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, Lumen de Lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero, genitum non factum, consubstantialem Patri;

Meie usume! in Spiritum Sanctum, Dominum et vivificantem, qui ex Patre (Filioque) procedit. Qui cum Patre et Filio simul adoratur et conglorificatur:

We believe! in unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum, et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.

We believe in one God, almighty Father, maker of heaven and earth, seen and unseen.

… in one Lord Jesus Christ, son of God the only Father

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of life, who proceeds the Son and the Father.

And one, holy, catholic and apostolic church. We forgive one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And look for the resurrection of death, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

8. LINNAPEA

“Kokku, kokku, kooreke,
midadi-mädadi, männake!!

Kibadi-kobadi koku mingu,
midadi-mädadi, mättad tulgu,
Taevast tulgu, sisse mingu,
ümmer manna mitsa-matsa,
Leiva peale litsa-latsa, ah, ah, ah, ah!
Lastel lõbus tantsu lüla,
võid ja pehmet leiba süia,
ah, ah, ah, ah!”

Kokku, koorekene! from Tori, 1961

Minu linn on minu teater,
seda kõik te teadma peate.

Mis siin toimub, määran mina,
seda tunneb minu nina.

Kui ta teinekord on nohus,
võtab asja üle kohus.

Algab tants, siis lihtsast reeglist —
mina paistan igast peeglist.

Ja kui tantsite te tublilt,
mulle aplodeerib publik!

8. MAYOR

“Thicken, thicken precious cream,
splish-splash butter-whisk!

Clitter-clatter come together,
splish-splash, clumps must come,
Come from the sky, get in the butter,
round the whisk, squish-squash,
Onto the bread, split-splat, ah, ah, ah, ah!
Fun for the children to dance around,
while eating their fresh baked bread and butter,
Hah, hah, hah, hah!”

Kokku, koorekene! Thicken Precious Cream! from Tori, 1961

My own town is my own theatre,
That is all you need to know here.

I make all the big decisions,
My nose tells me your positions.

If my nose with a cold is fraught,
Matters then can end up in court.

Start the dance, a simple system —
My reflection in every rhythm.

And if your dancing’s fine and free,
The public credits it all to me!

9. ELU
Väärt tantsupartner küll, kes samme juhib,
kuid kus on õhin, tantsurõõm ja – tuhin?

Kus sellest puudu, astun mängu mina —
ja siis te alles näete pikka nina!

Ei maksa unustada seda ka,
et maksta võib,
kuid määrab muusika
see, mis ei allu inimtahtele,
ei mitte ühelegi tehtele.

Kuid tõsi — pärast seda avaldust
mus tõuseb tuju, trots ja tantsulust!

Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotensDomine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

9. LIFE
A worthy dance partner indeed, who leads the steps well,
but where’s all the joy, ardour and zeal of dance?

When I step in to the pattern myself —
Then what happens to you, you will see!

Remember that such living can be bought,
But music cannot —
it springs from another source,
Not subject to the human will,
Our manipulation cannot bring it birth.

Revelations like that leave me feeling
Defiant and joyful, ready for dance!

Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, We give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, heaveny King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only begotten son, Lord God, Lamb of God Lord God, you take away the sings of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

1. JUTLEJA
Hääd olevused inimesist-inimloomist —
Teil tahan näidata üht lihtsat joonist.

Noh — vaevalt keegi mäletab teist loomist,
on keegi kuulnud molekulist, rakust või siis oomist,
mitokondrist, DNA-st, ioonist …

Ent siiski inimesed kõik
ja igal pirukast on oma lõik.
Et raisku-roisku ei läeks olemise tõik,
et lagunema ei jääks meie elu maja,
üht lugu täna rääkida on vaja.
Nii mõnelgi meist elu siin on raisus —
siin mõnude ja mõru rõõmu kaisus!
Nüüd jätkem surm ja ülendugem hetkeks,
teid kehutan end valmis säädma retkeks,
kuid võtkem kõneleja rolli ELU ISE — igaks petteks!

Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison,
Kyrie eleison.

1. PREACHER
Good people mortal human beings —
Let me show you a simple vision.

Now — I don’t think we remember the creation,
maybe we’ve heard of molecules and cells or else of ohms,
mitochondria, DNA, and ions …

But still, you are all human,
You each have a cup of life to drink.
So that our existence does not wither,
Abandoning the house of life to ruin,
We need to tell this story, here, today, It is imperative.
Some lives among you have been shattered —
Thrown away in useless, wasteful pleasures!
But let’s leave death aside and celebrate a while,
I urge you all – prepare now for our journey,
and let us cast LIFE ITSELF in the speaker’s role — why not?

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

2. JUTLEJA
Merest on tõusnud maa.
Maast on kerkinud linn. Tallinn.
Kirikutornide kõrgune,
kõikide turgude laiune linn.
Tallinn.

Elu siin tänagi tantsib.
Kõiki tunneb ja teretab,
kõiki tantsule palub
Elu ise.
Kuulakem tema häält!

2. PREACHER
From the sea land has risen.
The land grew a city. Tallinn.
It arose to the height of church towers,
It grew wide with thriving commerce.
Tallinn.

Even here life dances today.
Knows and greets each and everyone,
calls everyone to the dance
Life itself.
Listen all to her voice!

3. ELU
Siin tahan elada, siin,
Kus valitseb tõemeel, õiguse riik,
Kus vabadusel on koda
Ja kodanikel on süda,
mis tunneb, mis tunnistab!

Ma sellele tantsule kutsun kõik,
kel inimhing kanda on antud!
Ma sellele tantsule kutsun kõik,
kel vaimule keha on ankruks,
kel kiire on aina ja töömure painab
ja vähe on raha — suurt muud ju ei taha,
tost vir-varrist lõppeks teil süda on paha!

See tants las kisub metsikuks ja meeletumaks kätte;
see tants las kisub imikuid ja tõmbab vanu ätte!
Nüüd unustage ümbritseva ilma nukker melu
ja kuulatage-kuulge sosinaid — on see vast elu!

3. LIFE
I prefer to live here, here.
Where honesty governs, and justice leads,
Where freedom true may reign,
and citizens may have a heart,
that feels, that bears witness!

To this dance you are now invited, all,
Everyone who has a spirit!
To this dance you are now invited, all,
Everyone’s limbs are anchored soul,
Everyone oppressed by travail or stress
and lack of money — just enough to live on,
or life is too desperate, Despair that sickens!

This dance is devil-may-care and frenzied and wild at heart;
This dance must waken infants, drag elders from hiding!
Forget now the world’s encompassing cacophonic sorrow
and everybody listen, whispering – this is true life!

4. KERJUS

Üt’s kõrd olli noorimiisi, noorimiisi, illus pois…
(from Joodiku Kojukutse,
Hargla, 1957)

4. BEGGAR

Once there was a young man, a young man, a pretty boy…
(from Joodiku Kojukutse/The Drunkard is called back home, Hargla, 1957)

I once had this and that, but I never knew how much.
Looking back, though, it seems I had it all.

Time brought worries — it even erodes rock
And time broke a few things. Only sand remained.
Or maybe clay, I don’t care.

I don’t worry, neither do I try to,
In my mind no poison of regret ferments —
Now I live as a bird would on a branch.

I eat what I can find, and where I’ll rest my head at night,
I don’t know each morning,
That’s fine with me.

Once there was a young man, a young man, a weak boy…

I could not build a nest, a home,
Even if I had bricks — I don’t care.
You can still throw me a slice of your bread.

5. ELU
Küll mulle meelepärane partner sa oleksid,
oleksid, oleksid,
kui ei oleks sa nõnda loid.

Ah, need oleksid! Ah, need oleksid!
Tants nõuab jõudu.
Tants nõuab kirge,
tants nõuab pühendumist!

Võta maast oma müts, suru pähe.
Tõuse püsti. Ja nüüd!
Peaasi on sirge selg, peahoid.

Tants nõuab jõudu.
Tants nõuab kirge,
tants nõuab pühendumist!

Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison,
Kyrie eleison.

5. LIFE
What a delightful dancing partner you would be,
you would be,
If only you could find your will.

Ah, those if-onlies! Ah, those if-onlies!
Dance demands vigour.
Dance demands passion,
dance demands all of your love!

Put your hat on your head and wear it.
Stand up straighter, right now!
Strengthen, give yourself poise, at last.

Dance demands vigour.
Dance demands passion,
dance demands all of your love!

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

6. NUHK
Ma juhtumisi kuulsin pealt —
üldjuhul kuulen kõigest,
mis toimub – selle eest on kantud hoolt.

See ülesanne mulle antud
kõrgemate poolt.
Ja mõistagi ma mõistan, olen poolt.

Ma olen üldse enamasti poolt,
ja enamasti enamuse poolt —
just sinna juhib mind mu vaba tahe,
et võimust võimalikult väike oleks vahe.

Ma pole suur, ei kõrge, kuid mu käes
on niite, mis võiks niita jalust neid,
kes võimutsevad täna täies väes.

Nad heldelt maksavad, nad veel ei tea,
mil pakule võib minna nende pea.

6. SPY
I just happened to overhear all that—
I usually hear about everything,
That’s going on—I make it my business.

This assignment was given to me
by my superiors.
And of course, I shall comply with compliance.

As a rule, I will let myself agree,
with mostly the majority viewpoint;
That’s how my instincts guide me close to
where there’s power.

I’m not significant, but in my hands
are strings that easily can take down those
Who wield command or influence today.

They will pay the price – they still don’t
know to which chopping block their head may go.

7. ELU
Oi, sina! Kui salajane, kui sujuv on sinu samm!
Kui libe, kui liuglev, kui eimillekski hajuv!

Mida nõutakse, see sa oled. Igasobilik nõu —
muljuda vaja sind pole, sest puudub vastupanu.

Natuke igav on sinuga tantsida, natuke ligane
tundud sa ihu ligi.

Tunnen ma, küll ma tunnen
ära reeturi higi.

Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison.

7. LIFE
Oh, you! Look at your stealth, look at your secretive ways!
How oily, how devious, how lacking in true backbone!

Now you only what they demand. You are emptiness, void —
I do not need to wound you, for you have no resistance.

It’s so dull to dance with one who is
slithering, it’s so dull if you’re slippery beside me.

I know well, how well I do know
Sweat of a traitor.

Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.
